How to Avoid a Dental Implant Failure

One of the great things about living in today’s world is the fact that you no longer need to settle for missing teeth. There are several different tooth replacement options out there to choose from, including dental implants. Dental implants in San Diego have become popular because of their many benefits, like being long lasting and having a high success rate. However, a dental implant failure is still possible. What Causes Dental Implant Failures?

Here are a few of the most common reasons for dental implant failures:

  • Peri-implantitis: Dental implant failures are often caused by an infection that develops around the implant and gum tissue. This can be brought on by poor oral hygiene after the implant placement surgery has been completed.
  • Bone loss: With missing teeth comes bone loss. This is because the root of the missing tooth is not there to stimulate the bone with regular chewing. When an implant is placed in an area where there isn’t enough bone tissue, it might not be able to fuse to the jawbone properly. This is why bone grafts are sometimes necessary.
  • Dental trauma: If you endure an injury or receive a blow to the mouth, you could end up with a dislodged implant.

How Can Dental Implant Failures Be Avoided?

Some dental implant failures are out of your control, but many times, they can be prevented. Here are some tips to lower your probability of experiencing one:

  • Oral hygiene: Even though your implants aren’t susceptible to decay, you can’t slack on your oral hygiene. Healthy gum tissue and surrounding teeth are necessary in order to keep your implants strong. Brush twice and floss once daily. It is also a good idea to use mouthwash.
  • See your dentist: By visiting your dentist every six months for a checkup, they will be able to check to ensure that your implants are in great health. Any issues can be addressed sooner rather than later.
  • Don’t smoke: Using tobacco products interferes with the healing process after implant placement surgery. You should refrain from smoking for at least a few months after your procedure.
  • Increased calcium intake: Calcium is necessary for strong bones. This is a mineral that can be found in milk, yogurt, broccoli, oranges, and cheese.
  • Avoid bad habits: Don’t be having hard candies or chewing on ice. Ask your dentist about nightguards if you think you have bruxism.

Dental implant failures are unlikely, but you shouldn’t let your guard down. Use the tips listed above so that you can reduce your risk. This way, you can reap the benefits of your implants for many years to come!
